Keep reading to learn about five artists that are sure to leave you motivated, encouraged, and moved. 5 Inspiring Hispanic Musicians Gloria Estefan Pop Singer Source: Jesus Cordero Gloria Estefan was born in Havana, but her family fled from Cuba to Miami when she was a young girl. After serving in Vietnam, Gloria’s father became very ill. With her mother working and attending night classes, Gloria was left at home to care for her father and sister. These responsibilities were a lot for a teenager, but Gloria turned to music as an escape. She would lock herself in her room and sing for hours. In 1975, Gloria became acquainted with a keyboardist who later became her husband. He led a band called “the Miami Latin Boys” and asked Gloria to be the lead vocalist as soon as he heard her sing. The band’s name was later changed to “the Miami Sound Machine.” Their albums launched to the top of the charts, and Gloria was called a demure, Hispanic version of Madonna. Her story doesn’t stop there, though. A car accident while on tour in 1990 left Gloria with broken vertebrae in her back. Never one to stay down, she made a miraculous recovery and was back on tour and making albums within the year. To this day Gloria Estefan is still making music, with many projects paying tribute to her native home of Cuba. Santana Guitarist Source: Libby Fabro Santana has become a very familiar name, working with artists from every genre such as Michelle Branch and DJ Khalid, but it hasn’t always been that way. Growing up in Mexico, Santana’s father originally taught him how to play the violin, but he found that he liked the electric guitar much more. As a teenager living in Tijuana, Santana started out performing at a variety of small venues.  He later moved to San Francisco and spent his days working as a dishwasher in a diner and playing for change on the streets.  B.B. King and Ray Charles were two of his biggest musical inspirations. Santana never gave up on his dreams though, and eventually decided to pursue music full time. What started out as “The Santana Blues Band” later became known as “Santana” and gained a mass following, even performing at Woodstock. The crowds loved Santanas sound a mix of blues, rock, and jazz. The band released multiple albums that went platinum and Santana has continued to win Grammy awards. He also recently published a memoir called The Universal Tone: Bringing My Story to Light with the hope of inspiring others, and it became a national bestseller. Ruben Gonzalez Pianist Source: Ebet Roberts Ruben Gonzalez is proof that it’s never too late to pursue your passion. He released his debut album at the age of 78! Ruben originally studied medicine, but later in life he decided to pursue music. He was known for his Latin jazz sound and was requested by many bands and ensembles. Ruben was best known for working with the Afro Cuban All Stars and the Buena Vista Social Club, specializing in Latin dance and traditional Cuban music. His album with the Buena Vista Social Club won a Grammy in 1997, and that same year Ruben decided to release his first solo album “IntroducingRuben Gonzalez.” After releasing a second album in 2000, he died three years later knowing that he had done what he loved with his life. His music is still enjoyed by many. Placido Domingo Opera Singer Source: Barbara Davidson Both of Placido’s parents were singers for Spanish operettas in Madrid, which definitely contributed to his remarkable tenor voice and musical abilities. This didn’t mean that his success came easily, though. After moving to Mexico at eight years old, Placido began appearing alongside his parents in performances. He originally played the piano and enrolled in school to become a conductor, but later decided to focus on singing. Placido had a few small television appearances and often played in piano bars to earn money. At 18 years old, he began landing roles in various opera productions. Placido continued to work hard and eventually won a Grammy award for Best Opera Recording in 1971. Fourteen Grammys later, he is now in his seventies and lives by the motto, “If I rest I rust.” Placido didn’t even let health problems such as cancer slow him down. He is still performing, recording, and running a prestigious voice competition called “Operalia” to discover and nurture new talent. Selena began singing as a child. She was the lead in her family’s band alongside her brother and sister. The band originally performed at her parents’ restaurant, weddings, and fairs. As their music became increasingly popular, the band started to record albums and go on tour. Eventually Selena was signed as a solo artist, and her Spanish-language albums received major accolades and awards. She began to work on her first English album, but before she could see its release, she was killed by one of her own fans at just 23 years old. Selena’s untimely death was shocking to all who enjoyed her music. Her English album, “Dreaming of You,” was later released in 1996. The album sold more than a million copies and introduced many people to Tejano music. Understanding Chord-Grid Notation Along with guitar tablature (or tabs), chord grids are an important shorthand method of notating guitar music. Although it is important for all guitar students to learn to read music notation eventually, tablature and chord grids are usually a better option for beginners who just want to learn simple rock, pop, or folk songs quickly. Remember, the notation is just a means to an end, and just another way to learn something youll play on your guitar. With chord-grids, you are looking at a simple diagram, or snapshot, of the guitar neck. The guitar is oriented so that the headstock is pointing upward; horizontal lines represent the fret-wires that separate the frets (spaces), and the vertical lines are strings. Dots inside the diagram represent left-hand fingers, which are placed over the string inside the indicated fret. For the A chord pictured here, all three fingers sit inside the second fret. Set your fourth (pinky) finger on the 2nd string, your third (ring) finger on the 3rd string, and your second (middle) finger on the 4th string. Often the left-hand thumb will stay anchored on top of the neck to deaden the sixth string. Alternatively, the edge of a fretting finger can be used to mute an adjacent string. This is called a flesh mute and allows the guitarist to strum all six strings so that only five strings are heard. 5 Open-String, Easy Guitar Chords for Beginners Once you understand the notation, the next step is to get the chords down by memory. In some cases, these basic guitar chords can be remembered easily by comparing them to geometric shapes. If you connect the dots inside each grid, youll see that the A is a straight line, the C is a diagonal line, the D is an equilateral triangle, and the G chord forms an isosceles triangle. After you have the chords memorized, its time to check each chord string-by-string to ensure all the notes are sounding. Elizabeth: The Oregon State University campus is located in Corvallis, Oregon, a relatively small town off Highway 5. The campus is somewhat urbanits only about a 15-minute walk from campus to downtownbut it still feels secluded when youre nestled on its 422 acres. Oregon State University owns a lot of the surrounding land around campus, so there are always peaceful places to take walks and enjoy nature. Campus is extremely safe, day or night, and there are free buses that will take you all over campus.There is also a van service called Safe Ride that will take you from many places off-campus back to your dorm or apartment. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants at Oregon State University? Elizabeth: Im really lucky with my major and my college, because liberal arts isnt one of Oregon State Universitys most popular fields. However, that just means more attention from incredible professors and advisers. Ive been able to create close bonds with my favorite professors, something that many of my friends in liberal arts majors at other schools have never experienced. Elizabeth: Oregon State University mandates that all first-year students live on campus, which makes it incredibly easy to meet new friends. There are countless events held to allow first-years to bond and get to know campus and school resources. There are 13 dorms spread all over campus, and in all honesty, some are in better shape than others. The resident assistants are great, and they go through extensive training to prepare them to be great mentors for first-year students. The dining options on campus are varied, and getting better all the time. There are plenty of dietary options, and the people in charge are always happy to accommodate your dietary needs. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? Elizabeth: Engineering and agricultural majors are best represented and supported at Oregon State University. However, Corvallis has been rated one of the most environmentally friendly towns in the United States, and Oregon State University has several LEED-certified buildings, and all of these factors have contributed to a strong environmental science major. I am finishing my degree in English literature, and I was always supported by excellent faculty and resources. While Oregon State University may not be known for English, I have had some of the most talented authors and scholars as instructors, which goes to show just how excellent even the smaller departments are at Oregon State University. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life at Oregon State University? Elizabeth: It is impossible not to meet people as a freshman at Oregon State Universitymost of your classes will be for first-year students, most of your residence hall will be made up of first-year students, and there are always events going on all over campus. Making friends is ultimately up to you, but there are countless opportunities to do so. Greek life is definitely present on campus. We have lots of sororities and fraternities that conduct events on campus and off, but they are certainly not the focus of social life. If Greek life appeals to you, there will definitely be a place for you at one of the houses. If Greek life isnt your thing, you will still be able to make amazing friends and enjoy your time at Oregon State University. How helpful is the Career Center and other student support services? Elizabeth: The student support services at Oregon State University, from the Career Center to student health, are incredibly helpful and always available for students. Its really simple to get an on-campus job if youre interested, and there are countless resources for careers after graduation. Oregon State University holds multiple career fairs per year, attended by companies like Boeing, Intel, and Oregon State Credit Union. There are also many different internship opportunities through Oregon State University that could take you anywhere in the world youd like to go. How are the various study areas such as libraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Elizabeth: You will always find a quiet place to study at Oregon State University. Though the library may get crowded during finals week, you can always find a spot in the historic Memorial Union, your residence hall lounge, an empty classroom on campus, or a cute coffee shop off-campus. Before and after finals, there is ample room in all six floors of our state-of-the-art library. There will always be room for you at Oregon State University. Describe the surrounding town. Elizabeth: Corvallis is a small, artsy town with an engaged community. There are lots of great riverfront spots, breweries, theaters, hiking trails, farmers markets, and events available throughout the year. Downtown Corvallis is beautiful and quirky, so people do tend to spend a lot of time there, but there are also areas of Corvallis with more practical spots like Home Depot, Winco, and Trader Joes. There are definitely times when the rain seems unforgiving, but during those weeks, its best to get out of the Oregon State University/Corvallis bubble and head up to Portland (about an hour and 20 minutes away) or down to Eugene (about 40 minutes away) to get a new perspective. How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes at Oregon State University? Elizabeth: Oregon State University has about 30,000 students, but many of them are graduate and ecampus students. Campus never really feels crowded. Some low-level classes can feel cramped, like the health or biology classes that most first-year students have to take, but they are also great bonding experiences for freshmen. Its easy to meet friends in classes like that. I know that some larger departments (like engineering) do have bigger class sizes, but most liberal arts classes are small and very personal. I loved my class sizes, because I felt that I got a great combination of the more typical college experience with auditorium-style classes, while also being able to regularly enjoy 15-person English classes. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one you regret the most. Elizabeth: I had the chance to take a class about Gothic literature with one of the best and most engaging professors in my department. The class was relatively large for an English class (around 30 people) but everyone in the class was truly excited about the material. We got the chance to examine texts like Dracula, Frankenstein, and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde while discussing the ways in which the once-cutting-edge texts have changed over the years. We ended on a modern novelSlade House by David Mitchelland examined the ways in which Gothic literature has shaped our culture. This class was incredibly fun, and I was so engaged that I wrote some of the critical analyses that I am most proud of and intend to use when I apply to graduate school. Our practice question will be from the June 2007 LSAT. This is Section 1, Question 1: A company employee generates a series of five-digit product codes in accordance with the following rules: The codes use the digits 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4, and no others. Each digit occurs exactly once in any code. The second digit has a value exactly twice that of the first digit. The value of the third digit is less than the value of the fifth digit. Rule 1 - First, we will diagram this question by pulling out each rule we are given. The first one states that it is a five-digit code, so we will make 5 blank spaces. __ __ __ __ __ Rule 2 - Next, we are told that these digits only use the digits 0-4 and no others. 0 1 2 3 4 Rule 3 - Then we are told each digit occurs only one time. 0 1 2 3 4 1 1 1 1 1 Rule 4 - The next rule is that the second digit has a value exactly twice that of the first digit, so: x 2x _ _ _ : From this rule we can infer that there are only two possibilities once this rule is considered, either: 1 2 _ _ _ OR 2 4 _ _ _ Rule 5 - Our final rule is that the value of the third digit is less than the value of the fifth digit. From this we infer that the number “4” cannot be in space 3 and the number “0” cannot be in space 5. Once you diagram it always is smart to make a few scenario possibilities with all the rules taken into account. So, we have: #1: 1 2 0/3 _ 3/4 â€" This is compiling all the rules since we know the second number has to be twice the first, which works here with 1 2. Question 1: If the last digit of an acceptable product code is 1, it must be true that the (A) first digit is 2 (B) second digit is 0 (C) third digit is 3 (D) fourth digit is 4 (E) fourth digit is 0 This is a “must be true” question and we must implement all of our previously stated rules in addition to the new one we are given, that the last digit has to be 1. Since we diagrammed and made example scenarios, this will be a piece of cake. We will use Scenario #2 here: #2: 2 4 0/1 _ 1/3 Our new rule is that digit 5 must be 1, so: 2 4 0/1 _ 1 Since each digit can only be used once (Rule # 3), we know that the third digit will have to be 0, and the only digit left for digit 4 is a 3- so we have our final code: 2 4 0 3 1. Now answering the question will be simple, we will just run through each answer choice and see which was holds to be true with the code we have created.
